New mining threat at the Grand Canyon? ? ? ? Friend ? this is scary. The Nuclear Energy Institute ? the lobbying arm of the nuclear industry ? just put out a call to the Trump administration to invoke an obscure provision in the Cold War-era Defense Production Act that opens the Grand Canyon region to uranium mining.

The NEI's letter calls on the president to "lift current federal land withdrawal restrictions prohibiting access to high grade domestic uranium deposits."

This is an all-hands-on-deck emergency. Right now, pro-environment lawmakers are pushing to block uranium mining on public lands like this. If they can get it to a vote, it's a game changer ? we could protect millions of acres of public lands.

For millennia, indigenous communities, including the Havasupai, Hualapai, Hopi, and Navajo Nation communities, have lived in and around the Grand Canyon. Any move to expand uranium mining within the Grand Canyon would risk destroying these sacred lands and exposing the water supply of indigenous communities to toxic uranium pollution.

This is how we stop it: Natural Resources Committee Chairman Rep. Grijalva has introduced the Grand Canyon Centennial Protection Act that will protect 1 million acres of land around the Canyon from uranium mining.

If this bill makes it through, it will block the uranium mining plan. We need to get it to a vote.
