Our consumer advocacy team works hard year after year to protect Massachusetts residents like you. But this year was different. Due to COVID-19, there was an uptick in consumer complaints. We handled more than 20,000 consumer complaints in 2020 – a 25 percent increase over last year.

 

A record number of consumers sought refunds for trips, gym memberships, concert and sporting event tickets, and weddings. We were able to recover $10 million in travel refunds and $319,000 for event cancellations. We also saw new scams pop up in an attempt to exploit the pandemic. No matter what the challenge may have been, our consumer assistance team was there to help.

 

At a time when so many Americans are struggling to make ends meet, every dollar counts. That’s why the dedicated public servants in my office take their responsibility so seriously and will stop at nothing to secure the money that Massachusetts consumers deserve.
