An incredible new chapter in our fight against the novel coronavirus has begun. Over the course of a week, two highly effective vaccines have been approved for emergency use by the FDA - first by Pfizer-BioNTech, then Moderna. Tens of millions of doses are already available, but with 330 million people in our country, each requiring two doses, it will be months before we are all protected.
This week, thousands of frontline health care workers received their first dose, and nursing home patients will soon be protected as well.
When cases of COVID-19 first struck the United States, we never imagined that merely 10 months later a safe and effective immunization would be developed, approved, and in thousands of arms already. I'm incredibly grateful to the scientists and researchers who have worked nonstop to deliver these safe and effective vaccines. You scientists are our heroes.
While this is an exciting step towards a return to normalcy, it is important to remember we still have a long road ahead of us. It will be several months before the vaccine is widely available. With cases rising across the country, and with much still to learn about how well these vaccines prevent the spread of this virus, we must continue to take the same precautions when it comes to keeping our distance, not gathering indoors, and wearing masks when with people outside our own households.
