Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is urging Joe Biden to forgive up to $50,000 of student debt per borrower in his first days in office According to the senator, “You don’t need Congress; all you need is the flick of a pen.”
More than 42 million Americans owe over $1.7 trillion in student loans, and if Biden were to act on his campaign promise and Schumer’s advice, they could see their debts reduced or eliminated overnight.
A recent YouGov poll found that 56% of Americans support student loan forgiveness, and we know that many working families could benefit from one fewer source of debt during the pandemic’s economic crisis.
