Friend,
Once again, our leaders have failed us: this time DC politicians have failed to pass meaningful relief for the people of our city and our country. $1800 a month when millions have been unable to work, unable to get the basic necessities of life! All while protecting corporate interests and preserving the status quo, where the rich pay nothing, and the rest of us are on our own. It is an outrage!
Even in the face of this incredible failure by politicians, New Yorkers take care of each other, through mutual aid, by checking on loved ones, neighbors and even strangers. Together, we will get through this, because that’s what we do. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
I decided to run a year ago because I thought it was time for somebody with my perspective, an Afro-Latina single mom, who grew up working class, who knows the struggles New Yorkers face, to move the establishment and bring a new perspective shared by millions of people. Now, after this unprecedented year of failed leadership I know that we need leadership at all levels of government that put people first!
Just like so many of you, I have done all I can for my community this year, but we should not need mutual aid: every New Yorker should have what they need to live in dignity, and that takes leaders who will make that happen. I am running for mayor today because I can see that we are not on our own, that we take care of each other, and that each of us has a stake in our neighbors’ thriving. It’s time that those values are centered at City Hall, and at all levels of our government.
We will get through this moment together and build something better.
In Solidarity,
Dianne
