AFGE Family,

At AFGE’s 2019 Legislative Conference, the Women’s and Fair Practices Departments awarded its first Augusta Y. Thomas Civil Rights Awards during the Legislative Civil Rights Luncheon. The Augusta Y. Thomas Civil Rights Award is in honor of a dedicated trade unionist and a true champion for civil, human, women, and workers’ rights.

Each year, the Women’s and Fair Practice’s Departments will present four deserving individuals with one of the Augusta Y. Thomas Awards for their demonstrated commitment and work in the following categories:

  • Education and Training
  • Member Mobilization
  • Legislative Political Action
  • Representation through Litigation

You can read the requirements for each award here and can fill out an electronic nomination form by clicking the hyperlinked text above. We encourage our AFGE locals, councils, districts and general members to nominate individuals who have proven themselves through their work and dedication to promoting civil, human, women, and workers’ rights within these four categories. We must continue to keep NVP Emeritus Augusta Y. Thomas’ legacy alive through the recognition of those who go above and beyond through exemplary activism.

The submission of nominations is open through 5 PM ET on February 1, 2021. All award winners will be announced and awarded during the 2021 Legislative Civil Rights Session.

If you have any questions regarding the awards and award process, please contact Women’s and Fair Practices Departments Program Specialist Denver Supinger at [email protected].

In Solidarity,

Jeremy A. Lannan
NVP for Women and Fair Practices
