John,
In a year full of unprecedented events, these last few weeks post-election have been—not surprisingly—unprecedented.
We’ve seen a defeated president ranting and raving about rigged elections, elected GOP officials unwilling to speak the truth, rumors about preemptive pardons and bribes, and an administration delaying the peaceful transition of power.
To make sense of it all, I hosted a virtual town hall with two noted scholars from opposite ends of the political spectrum—Caroline Fredrickson, senior fellow at the Brennan Center for Justice, and Paul Rosenzweig, a conservative legal scholar at the R Street Institute. Both offered helpful insights into how we can fix some of the problems Donald Trump is leaving in his wake.
If you believe we as a nation must clean up the mess Trump has made, not just these past four weeks but these past four years, will you sign my petition today? It is important that we stand together now — united.
Caroline and Paul reassured us that this was the fairest, most scrutinized election in our nation’s history, and Trump’s lawsuits trying to overturn the results are without merit. But they also warned that his baseless accusations are hurting our electoral system and our democracy.
While both said they were worried when Trump threatened to block the presidential transition and deny Joe Biden and his team access to critical information to keep our nation safe, secure, and running properly, they believe Biden’s appointees have the experience and skills needed to set our nation back on track quickly.
Regarding the all-important question of whether Trump and his family should be held accountable for any crimes they’ve committed, Caroline and Paul agreed they should. It’s an important feature of our nation that no one is above the law. But they cautioned that any legal proceedings must be done carefully to ensure transparency and fairness.
House Democrats have been working hard to pass legislation that will help rein in out-of-control leaders like Donald Trump, but with Mitch McConnell in charge, our efforts have gone nowhere in the Senate.
If you want Congress to institute laws that prevent presidents from manipulating our government for their own personal gain and threatening the well-being of our nation, please add your name to our petition right away!
Thanks,
Jared
