One year has now passed since the House voted to impeach President Donald J. Trump and to send a clear message:

No one, not even the President of the United States, is above the law.

Though the Republican-controlled Senate refused to hold Trump accountable for his wrongdoing, the American people took a stand on November 3rd and made it loud and clear through their votes: we reject another four years of this dangerous man in the White House.

During impeachment, we made the case that you couldn’t trust this president to do what’s right for this country, you could only trust he would do what’s right for Donald Trump. We argued that’s what he had done before, and what he would do until the election. That he would cheat in the election if we let him. That he would do untold damage to the nation. And that he would continue to degrade our democracy, even in defeat.

I wish we hadn’t been so right. And that Republican Senators had done their duty.

We will soon see a welcome restoration of decency to the Oval Office with the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden. And Trump can’t leave office fast enough, as far as I am concerned. While he golfs and hides from his duty to help the American people get through this pandemic, Trump is as dangerous as ever.

In the past day alone, Trump has betrayed our national security by downplaying a massive hack, and contradicted his own Secretary of State who attributed it to Russia. Not only that, he reportedly asked his aides about using the military to institute martial law in order to reject the results of our democratic election and remain in power.

I said it this time last year, and I’ll say it again: I don’t think it’s okay.

I don’t think it’s okay that this president is fraying the very fabric of our democracy with his endless conspiracy theories, rejection of our democratic norms, fearmongering, and attacks on the Constitution and the republic he was sworn to protect, putting himself above all else.

And I still don’t think it’s okay that in spite of the blatant threat Trump has posed again and again, the majority of my Republican colleagues refuse to condemn this treacherous behavior. Many stand by, proudly, with loyalty to their dear leader. It’s something I never in my wildest dreams imagined would happen here in the United States.

Though we have just 31 days left until Trump is officially out of office and Biden is sworn in, it’s up to us to remain vigilant and outspoken in defense of our democracy.

Trump will not succeed in his desperate attempts to cling to power. But how much damage will he do in the process? A lot , if we let him.

Let’s send a clear message to the GOP that we, the American people, don’t think it’s okay.
