Friend—President-elect Biden has nominated Rep. Deb Haaland, a 35th-generation New Mexican of Laguna Pueblo affiliation, to be our first-ever Native American Secretary of the Interior. For the first time ever, a Native person would oversee not only the federal government’s management of our lands, water, and wildlife, but its relationships with the 574 federally recognized Tribal Nations. This choice is monumental—and long overdue.
