It’s been a tough year on many fronts, and one of them is the rise in hate—both in terms of online activity and, tragically, acts of terror. With Trump actively encouraging far-right hate groups and spreading wild conspiracy theories, white supremacist groups have flourished in the United States.

In such dire times, CMD has stepped up its follow-the-money reporting, shining a spotlight on the murky world of hate-group funding and the right-wing media that spreads their dangerous lies and bigoted ideas. The drumbeat of disinformation can lead people to join hate groups and even, in some cases, commit acts of terror.

This year, CMD:

• Exposed how mainstream payment processors were helping hate groups raise money: a report that caused a number of companies to cut the hate groups off from their services.
• Documented how billionaire-funded politicians and conservative groups set the stage for a plot to kidnap the governor of Michigan.
• Exposed white nationalist extremists within ALEC’s leadership, and ALEC’s disturbing new ties with Christian Right organizations.
• Shined a light on support from Trump megadonors, the House Freedom Caucus, Club for Growth, the GOP, and corporate CEOs for radical right congressional candidates who embrace dangerous QAnon conspiracy theories.
• Revealed how DonorsTrust, the “dark money ATM” of the Koch donor network, gave $1.5 million to a white nationalist organization.

But we didn’t stop there. Right-wing media operations such as The Daily Caller and Project Veritas have either hired, or worked with, hate groups. Other far-right outlets like The Federalist and PragerU regularly publish conspiracy theories and discount racism. This year, CMD exposed these groups’ most recent funders, holding those wealthy interests accountable.

But we can’t do it without you! CMD depends heavily on support from people like you!
