Ban assault weapons!

Last week, Brady Legal won a case that upheld the local ban on assault weapons in Deerfield, Illinois. Rightfully so, the court ruled that the village of Deerfield has the right to enact common-sense laws to protect public safety. My name is Robert Schentrup and, as a survivor of the Parkland shooting, this victory means the world to me, John.

I've been fighting to pass common-sense gun laws since my sister, Carmen Schentrup, was shot and killed in the Parkland massacre. So I was encouraged to hear that the Deerfield Mayor attributed Brady and the town’s victory to the youth movement, specifically thanking the students who called for gun reform following the massacre at my former high school.

This I know: Because of my voice and thousands of other youth activists, elected officials are hearing us loud and clear. We are passing lifesaving laws, and we’re protecting them at all costs.

Now I have a message for all members of Congress: We need to federally ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines!

I know firsthand how lethal assault weapons truly are. The gunman at my former high school shot and killed 17 students and teachers in what seemed like an instant. He attached a high-capacity magazine to his rifle, making it even more lethal. And my community isn’t alone. Whether it’s Sandy Hook, Gilroy, or Las Vegas, assault weapons are mass shooters’ weapon of choice.

We're making progress in communities across the country, but in 2021, we need Congress to take action and ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. John, for me and thousands of other youth activists, can you add your name to this petition to ban assault weapons? We need to make sure Congress hears us loud and clear come the New Year.

With 2021 right around the corner, make your New Year’s resolution to always practice safe storage by storing your firearm locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition. It could save a lifeLearn more about Brady's End Family Fire program.
