Thank you to all of our supporters for making 2020 a memorable year. Without all of you, we wouldn't have been able to accomplish the life-saving work that we did. The love and kindness you all sent us via messages, donations and social media posts motivated up to keep going. We do this work because of the community that constantly uplifts our work.
This year was extremely challenging. We had to find new ways to continue supporting migrants given the limitations that the pandemic brought on. But, we were able to meet the needs of migrants because of you all.

Shelter Update! Your donations have been so well received by the shelters we support in Tijuana. Camino de Salvación has continued working on expanding their shelter.
They're almost finished creating a space that will allow them to better serve migrant families – just in time for the holidays! Check out our progress pics!

Because of your continued support, we were able to help the women’s shelter prepare for the winter with dozens of new blankets. This is a small touch that means a lot to them. Now they'll be able to be cozy and warm!
Our close partnership with the shelters helps us identify and cover the basic needs of migrants. We are grateful for these moments of joy and love. From behalf of all of the shelters - thank you to every single one of you for donating!
We're meeting this week with the shelter directors to assess their current and near future needs. As of now, we're planning on continuing to support with groceries, toys, rent and utilities, as needed.
Let's continue showing our migrant friends and family that they have our support and love during these precarious times.

Familias Reunidas

Another migrant has been released from detention! What a great way to end the week! Our Familias Reunidas Program was able to help Adwin, an asylum seeker from Ghana, bond out of the Imperial Regional Detention Center located in Imperial County (just east of San Diego). The 35-year-old asylum seeker was held in detention at the Imperial Regional Detention Facility for over 3 months.
We are so grateful to you for helping Adwin be reunited with his family during the holiday season. Time and time again we have seen people like him who despite having faced so much remain positive, polite, and hopeful. People like Adwin remind us of the resilience and strength of our beliefs migrant community and inspire us all.
Sadly, our work doesn’t end there. There are thousands more migrants in detention and we need your help to continue helping them. So far we have helped over 65 migrants! Help us help more migrants in need. All donations make a difference no matter the amount, and every dollar is spent towards getting someone out of detention!

Chula Vista reverses course, hits pause on sharing license-plate reader data with ICE, Border Patrol

"CHULA VISTA — Chula Vista has stopped — for now, at least — allowing federal Border Patrol and immigration agents to look at data that police collect from electronic license plate readers.
“I want to make it clear to the public that that data sharing has stopped,” Mayor Mary Salas said at a City Council meeting Tuesday.
The South County city has temporarily blocked federal agencies with an immigration enforcement component from looking at the data until the City Council learns more about the data-sharing program. That report to the council is likely to happen in January.
Those agencies include Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, which includes Border Patrol."

What Trump's new 'death to asylum' rule actually says

"The Trump administration has published a final rule on new procedures for processing asylum applications that will be effective on Jan. 11, 2021. The administration says that its objective is to “more effectively separate baseless claims from meritorious ones,” which “will better ensure groundless claims do not delay or divert resources from deserving claims.”
Immigration advocates call it the “death to asylum” rule."

Obama-era program for immigrants faces new court challenge

"HOUSTON — A federal court next week is expected to consider whether to invalidate a program that shields from deportation immigrants brought to the United States as children, potentially creating complications for the incoming administration of President-elect Joe Biden.
The challenge scheduled to be heard Dec. 22 in Houston concerns President Barack Obama’s original memorandum creating Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which currently covers about 650,000 people.
Federal courts have already turned away President Donald Trump’s efforts to end DACA. Under the order of a judge in New York, the Trump administration in December restored the program to its original terms under Obama, accepting new applications and full renewals of two-year work permits and general protections from deportation.
But the Houston case directly targets DACA’s original terms, not Trump’s effort to end the program. Texas and eight other states sued to end DACA, arguing it drains state educational and healthcare resources and violates federal law. Leading the lawsuit is Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who frequently brings conservative legal challenges, including the case seeking to subvert Trump’s election loss that was dismissed by the U.S. Supreme Court.
