Th is has been a truly momentous week as we get closer to the holidays. It began on Monday with the members of the electoral college from New Jersey and throughout the country [[link removed]] officially bestowing 306 electoral votes onto Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and in doing so representing the will of the people of the clear results of the election. Later, Governor Murphy was on hand at University Hospital in Newark as the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were administered to frontline healthcare workers [[link removed]] , signaling the beginning of the end of this national nightmare.
We are simultaneously nearing the end of both the Trump administration and the COVID-19 crisis, and getting closer to the end of this tumultuous year should fill all of us with hope for a better future in our country starting soon.

Maritza Beniquez has stood on the front line of the battle against COVID-19 since this crisis began in the Spring. As an emergency room nurse, she has treated patients up close and seen the horrors of this pandemic in a way that most of us could never imagine. That’s exactly why it was so exhilarating to see her receive the first dose of the vaccine administered in our state, with Governor Murphy and First Lady Tammy Murphy at her side. The Governor and his team are now working to ensure that vaccines continue to be distributed equitably and efficiently, first to frontline health workers and long-term care residents and then to more of the general population.

Here at the NJDSC, we’re going to take some time for the rest of the year to look back at some of the major progress that happened in 2020, despite the demands that the COVID-19 pandemic has placed on all of us.
2020 Rewind [[link removed]]
From the first days of his campaign, Governor Murphy made legalizing adult-use marijuana one of his main policy initiatives [[link removed]] . He understood then the injustice of a system that puts thousands of young black and brown men in jail every year for possessing small amounts of marijuana, as well as the economic development opportunities that legalization would present to our state. Despite opposition to legalization, the Governor along with legislative leaders and social justice advocates continued to push forward, eventually resulting in a breakthrough victory in this year’s election when the marijuana legalization referendum passed in a landslide [[link removed]] .
Now, with the state legislature passing bills to create the legal framework for this new industry and Governor Murphy expected to sign them in the coming days, the time of marijuana prohibition is nearly at its end. This signature accomplishment will lead to lasting positive changes in our state, thanks to Governor Murphy’s leadership.
