Last Monday, Trump’s EPA ignored public input – and the findings of its own scientists – and chose NOT to protect you from our nation’s deadliest air pollutant: particulate matter (PM), better known as soot.

EPA’s own analysis found that even if air quality around the country just met the current standard, long-term exposure to this ultra-fine pollution will still be associated with as many as 52,100 premature deaths across the country each year. 

It also found that a mere 25% reduction in the maximum allowable PM would save as many as 34,600 of those lives. With the new administration, we will have the chance to fight back — but only with your support.

The bad news continued on Wednesday of last week, when Trump’s EPA moved to cement their dirty legacy by finalizing a rushed rule designed to thwart efforts by future administrations to protect Americans from dangerous air pollution.

First, the rule sets requirements that make it harder for EPA staff to assess the benefits of clean air.

Next, it gives polluters new excuses to litigate against clean air protections that are vital for protecting our health and fully comply with the Clean Air Act.

Taken together, EPA’s actions make a mockery of health science and clear the way for our communities – particularly Black, Latino, Indigenous and other communities of color – to be exposed to elevated levels of harmful air pollution.

Our nation deserves better.
