Hi,
The Texas Democratic Party will never stop fighting to expand voting rights for all eligible Texas voters and to make sure voting is convenient, safe, and easy. Today we asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear our case arguing that every Texan be allowed to vote by mail. Today's filing is the next step in our battle to ensure that every Texan can have their voice heard.
This case would expand the option to vote by mail to every eligible Texas voter, regardless of age.
Make no mistake, there was never any reason for mail ballots to only be available to those 65 and older. Texas was one of only four states who maintained this unconstitutional rule for the last November election. This is shameful. For years Republicans, desperate to cling onto power, have used archaic voting laws to suppress the vote of the rising Texas electorate.
On January 11, the Supreme Court will decide whether or not they will consider our case this spring. We're hopeful that the US Supreme Court will adhere to the plain language of the Constitution and require Texas to allow all eligible voters to exercise their Constitutional right to vote -- and to do so by mail if they choose. This isn't about Democratic or Republican voters -- this is about democracy.
Time and time again, Republicans have shown us that they will destroy our democracy for their partisan gains. It's time for Texas' voting laws to accurately reflect the will of Texans.
As 46 other states have already recognized, it's time to stop using age to discriminate against voters. It's time to let the will of Texans -- all Texans -- be heard.
Adelante,
Gilberto Hinojosa
