Dozens of horses like the one pictured above were starved and neglected at the California Equine Retirement Foundation (CERF), a defunct rescue organization that should have given them life-long care and a safe haven. Instead, the horses were betrayed and abused — suffering at the hands of those entrusted to protect them.
Now they need justice, and you can make twice the difference in our fight. We have an ambitious year-end goal of $300,000, and to help us reach that goal, all gifts will be matched up to a total of $130,000 to double your impact in holding animal abusers like CERF accountable, saving the horses who remain there, and protecting more animals from cruelty.

For over 30 years, CERF accepted donations with the stated mission of rehabilitating horses and providing them a forever home. But according to witnesses, the horses at CERF were underfed to the point of starvation, with untreated medical conditions that caused suffering and death. |
One former CERF volunteer claimed that a horse suffered for days with a fatal digestive disorder before dying. In fact, in 2019, 44 horses were removed from CERF’s property in varying states of neglect and starvation. But CERF has refused to allow the remaining horses — approximately 20 of them — to be rescued.
John, these horses are victims of animal cruelty, and it is our duty to pursue every legal avenue to protect them.
