Dear John,

After nearly ten months of the COVID-19 crisis, I know every one has been deeply impacted by this virus or its consequences.

Over 15 million Americans have contracted COVID-19 and millions more have lost their jobs because of the economic fallout. Parents are juggling working from home with remote learning, frontline workers are risking their health to provide essential services, and small business owners are struggling to hold on to their livelihoods and the employees they view as family.

With one vaccine now cleared to roll out and others soon to follow, there is a clear end in sight to this crisis. That end is not close enough for many of our neighbors, which is why I am focused on doing everything I can to fight for Delaware families. I am working hard to pull together colleagues from across the political spectrum to get the next relief package signed into law -- one that includes relief for folks who are out of work, facing eviction, and struggling to pay the bills, as well as our schools, health care professionals, and small business owners.

In the meantime, there is something tangible we all can do to support our communities and help each other get through these tough times: if you are able to shop this holiday season, shop local where and when you can.

If you are buying gifts for your loved ones, pick out something from a small business in your community. Next time you stop for essentials, remember the local stores or markets that depend on local buyers to stay in business. Our small businesses -- from restaurants to clothing stores to corner markets -- need our support to survive.
