John, Last week, the Orlando Sentinel “unendorsed” me and in fact apologized to its readers for ever endorsing me because, in their words, I “wanted to overturn the election.” This hit piece was written without asking me for a single statement. That’s why I decided to respond with my own op-ed: “Last week, I signed onto the Texas case filed in the U.S. Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of actions in several states because I think restoring confidence in our elections process by working through our judiciary is what a democracy should do.
This nonviolent, legal action on behalf of millions of Americans who share my concerns earned an outraged response from the Orlando Sentinel (“We apologize for endorsing U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz, who wants to overturn the election,” Dec. 12) without so much as a phone call seeking to understand why I agreed with the significant constitutional issues raised in the suit." You can read my Op-Ed reply to the Sentinel here.
The publication should be downright embarrassed for calling me a coward and claiming that I do not support American democracy. During my career in the special forces, I woke up every morning and put my life on the line for this great nation. The Sentinel’s intentions for this personal attack were clear - “canceling” someone that they disagree with rather than debating or even discussing the issue.
