Reaching net zero by 2050 or sooner is getting some major traction by the global investor community and corporations.
This week, Climate Action 100+, the world’s largest investor-led initiative to tackle the climate crisis, released its latest progress report. And the results are more than encouraging.
This new report reveals that nearly 50% of focus companies engaged by Climate Action 100+ investors have made commitments to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner. These commitments come from the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitters and are critical to reaching the goals of the Paris Agreement by accelerating the transition to a net-zero emissions economy. The report also details sector-level progress and case studies for the focus companies engaged by investors through Climate Action 100+.
The Climate Action 100+ 2020 Progress Report also outlines the significant growth and evolution of Climate Action 100+. There are now more than 545 investor signatories with over $52 trillion AUM engaging with 167 companies through the initiative.
Despite the significant growth in signatories and net-zero commitments, the report also details ongoing gaps in company commitments and ambition, including indirect Scope 3 corporate emissions.
Detailed focus company scorecards that evaluate company progress against the goals of the initiative will be released in the first quarter of 2021.
And investors aren’t just putting pressure on companies to reach net-zero emissions, they’re also committing to reducing emissions across their portfolios.
Last week, ahead of the 5th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, a leading group of 30 global asset managers representing more than $9 trillion AUM announced the launch of the Net Zero Asset Managers initiative. This initiative reaffirms investors’ commitment to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions as well as align their own investment strategies to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.
By leveraging investors to engage with global companies and with each other, we are more confident than ever before that we can reach net-zero emissions and transform the economy to protect people and the planet.
