Parliamentary Diary
Dear Friend,
I hope that this Parliamentary Diary finds you well and you and your families are staying safe this Christmas.
This is a very worrying time for all with cases and infection rates sharply on the rise within our communities and our hospitals coming under increasing pressure. Our festive period will inevitably be very different this year as we play our part in protecting our loved ones by keeping our Christmas small and safe and avoiding mixing with people we don't live with. Safety must come first.
Hope is on the horizon for next year, but until then we must continue to pull together to keep our families safe and protect our NHS.
The silver lining of this year has been the fantastic response of our local communities. It's been incredibly heartening to see the community spirit displayed in Cardiff North. Whether that's helping with food shops for those shielding, food bank drives and donations or just being there for somebody to talk to. It's been fantastic to see us all pulling together to get through this incredibly tough time!
2020 certainly has been an eventful year, and one which most of us will be very glad to see the back of! But I am hopeful for a brighter 2021 and I look forward to the time when I can see you all in person once again!
As ever, my team and I are here to help in any way we can. If there's anything we can do to assist please do not hesitate to get in touch on

Deal or No Deal?
[link removed]
It’s been a rollercoaster few weeks in Parliament and Brussels as we wait and see as to whether the UK will negotiate a trade deal with the EU or whether we will crash out with a No Deal Brexit. I've been speaking to businesses and people across the constituency about the risk no deal poses.
The Prime Minister promised an ‘oven ready deal’ but this is nowhere to be seen. This could be more of the PM’s infamous bluff and bluster at eleventh hour negotiations but businesses and livelihoods hang in the balance. Talks between the EU and UK could cease this weekend if no progress is made and
here's what the impact of No Deal could be on families. ([link removed])
With just two weeks to go, the UK Government must take responsibility and stop playing politics with people's lives and livelihoods. It must give the clarity the nations need.
Changes to Covid Measures
From the 28th December Wales will move to alert level 4 in order to meet the scale of case rises and keep people safe. Here's some frequently asked questions ([link removed]) on the rules during the Christmas period and here's some more info on Tier 4 restrictions. ([link removed])
Earlier today I had one of my regular meetings with the Cardiff and Vale Health Board - it was a very sobering insight into the situation here in Cardiff with the sharp rises in infections within our communities and in pressure on our hospitals. We must ensure we play our part to protect our loved ones and NHS this Christmas.
General Election: A Year On
[link removed]
This month marked a year since the 2019 General Election when Cardiff North put its faith back in me at the ballot box. We absolutely couldn't have done it without the support of our fantastic volunteers who knocked on doors, posted leaflets and picked up the phone, come rain or shine.
And what a year it has been! It has been an honour to represent Cardiff North and I'll continue to support you as best as I can and stand up for what matters to you most!
Standing Up Against Fire & Rehire Tactics
No employee should be subject to shameful fire and rehire tactics, especially at Christmas. That's why I've joined over 140 colleagues calling on Centrica to take the fire and rehire threat off the table and work with GMB Union to stop the British Gas Fire.
Throughout this pandemic I've been working with unions and constituents to stand up against businesses behaving badly. I'll continue to fight against appalling fire and rehire tactics in Cardiff North.
Millions of Lives in Yemen at Risk
Guardian Article ([link removed])
The lives of millions in Yemen are at risk if access to aid is cut as a result of a blanket classification of Houthis as terrorists. UK Government must focus on this critical issue, show leadership and not follow in Trump's footsteps.
I've written to Dominic Raab to express my concerns that the outgoing Trump administration is considering this, urging UK Government to take action.
Christmas Comes to Whitchurch
Julie and I have been working with local organisers after we were made aware of the real prospect that Whitchurch village might not have Christmas lights this year. Despite the challenging times, the local community made a huge effort to fundraise for the lights and it was thought donations would have to be returned if urgent action wasn’t taken.
We are really pleased that after our intervention and working with the local community, the lights have now been installed and Christmas has come to Whitchurch.
Politics Live Panel
I recently joined Jo Coburn on the panel of Politics Live, discussing all the top news stories and latest from Parliament. We discussed Covid, vaccines, mask wearing as well as the latest on Brexit. I debunked the Tory fake news that the UK was first to licence a vaccine because of Brexit and outlined the devastating impact No Deal would have on businesses and livelihoods in Cardiff North.
Support Local Businesses this Christmas
[link removed]
We recently marked Small Business Saturday. Our local businesses are the lifeblood of our communities and they need our support now more than ever. Despite the restrictions, there are still lots of ways we can support these invaluable businesses in the coming weeks for example using their online or takeaway services. Many businesses are still operating as normal too. Please show your support to Cardiff North’s business community this Christmas by shopping local and shopping safe.
Top 10 Tips towards a more sustainable Christmas!
View Tips ([link removed])
The Cardiff North Eco Team has partnered up with Birchgrove WI's ([link removed]) Climate Action Group to bring your our top 10 tips towards a more sustainable Christmas. This was one of the fantastic ideas that came up in the Eco Team's first meeting as a way for us to do our part for the environment this Christmas! We hope you enjoy them!
Cadi Visits Pets at Home!
It was great to join Cadi and the Pets at Home Ty Glas store colleagues in Llanishen recently. We heard more about their charity Support Adoption For Pets which has been supporting rehoming centres and pets in need since 2006.
Staff even adopted the store's furry friends during lockdown to ensure they were properly looked after!
Casework Catch Up
Emergency Fund Fiasco
My constituent is a carer for their elderly and disabled mother. They needed to purchase emergency medical supplies and their application for the Discretionary Assistance Fund was refused. I intervened and my constituents were advised they were eligible for the fund which would enable them to purchase the supplies they needed.
Social Services Support
A constituent urgently needed a referral to Adult Social Services for support with their mental health. We were able to contact Adult Social Services and ensure the appropriate medical support that my constituent needed was in place.
Looking after your wellbeing this Christmas
The festive period can be a difficult time for many, and this has been an especially difficult year for us all. Some of us may be experiencing mental health problems for the first time due to Covid, or others may be struggling more than usual. Here's some info on looking after your wellbeing during the festive period ([link removed]) , which provides tips on how to cope as well as suggestions for supporting others.
As always, please get in touch with your feedback!
