Dear John:

Workers in NYC just won a BIG victory! The New York City Council just passed Brad’s bill enacting just cause protections for fast food workers -- shielding 67,000 New Yorkers from unfair firings.

For years, NYC fast food employees, who are 2/3 women and 90% people of color, have worked under the threat of being fired on a whim. Workers are often fired abruptly and arbitrarily, like for “not smiling enough. In one survey, 65% of NYC fast food workers report being fired without reason.

This makes workers afraid of speaking out about health and safety conditions, like the Manhattan Chipotle that was infested by rats for weeks before the company took action.

Now, employers will be required to include written rationale (a “just cause”) before letting someone go -- protections that workers in so many other sectors take for granted.

Brad introduced the bill in response to organizing by fast food workers and worked with them to build a broad coalition of support both inside and outside the Council. This is the leadership we need: Listening to the community, identifying injustice, then making tangible progress to improve thousands of lives.

The just cause law passed yesterday is one of the first of its kind in the country -- and as The New York Times [[link removed]] reports, local laws like this “could catch fire across the nation.”

And it passed because Brad didn't give up on a prolonged fight, working with advocates like SEIU 32BJ and colleagues like Councilmember Adrienne Adams to get the bill to a vote after two years of campaigning.

We have plenty of NYC politicians who talk a big game about ending injustice. Brad backs up his talk with action. That’s the kind of leadership we need in citywide office to bring NYC into the future.
