Dear John,

We are excited to introduce the 49 newest members of the

Civil Society Fellowship to you and the rest of our ADL community.

The Civil Society Fellowship is a partnership between ADL and The Aspen Institute that prepares the next generation of community and civic leaders, activists and problem solvers from across the political spectrum to apply their talent and skills toward engaging deeply across often-polarizing divides in our country. The goal: to help lead toward building a more civil society.

“Today, our nation confronts incredible challenges that can only be overcome through collaboration and unity. At the same time, our nation is more divided than ever, which is clearly visible in our political landscape. We believe that the next generation of leaders is our best hope for progress.”

— Marc Rowan, lead benefactor of Civil Society Fellowship, philanthropist, co-founder of Apollo Global Management

The two new classes, for 2020 and 2021, reflect a diverse mosaic geographically, politically and ideologically. The new Fellows include mayors, chiefs of police, educators, entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, journalists, lawyers, poets, athletes and activists. They are also a diverse group in terms of economic and cultural backgrounds, race, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity.

All are proven leaders who have reached an inflection point in their lives where they are ready to apply their talent and skills to build a more civil society. They demonstrate a tripling of the Fellowship’s capacity, reflecting the heightened need to bring our nation’s future leaders together from across divisions to generate the broad-based solutions that our country needs. These new classes join the 20

inaugural Fellows in the Civil Society Fellowship and the 3,000+ Fellows in the Aspen Global Leadership Network, which includes current and former Fellows from numerous Aspen-sponsored fellowship programs.

Civil Society Fellows will gather over the next few years for a series of seminars and experiential learning around the world in this demanding program. Each Fellow is also launching a Leadership Venture, tackling a societal problem of their choosing that will stretch them and have a positive impact on their communities, their country, or the world.

The Civil Society Fellowship

Ably led by Nike Irvin, the Fellowship’s Managing Director, the Fellowship has brought together young leaders who are playing increasingly vital roles bridging communities and issues. Their collective engagement comes in the midst of a global pandemic with unprecedented health and financial impact, surging extremism, a national racial justice movement and the aftermath of the national election.

“2020 has blown away old norms, and given the urgent conditions in our country, we were inspired to increase our commitment to a healthy civil society by announcing two classes of stellar Civil Society Fellows. We are answering the heightened need for values-based leadership at this history-making time in our country and society.”

— Nike Irvin, Managing Director of the Civil Society Fellowship.

We are inspired by the dedication of this talented gathering of young leaders, and we know that they will make a tremendous impact in the coming years. We are already witnessing this with our first class of Fellows, who have been on the frontlines fighting against the COVID pandemic in fascinating ways, from helping government agencies acquire personal protective equipment, to developing safe and affordable housing in Indian Country during COVID, to taking the lessons from the Hurricane Katrina recovery to apply in post-pandemic planning.
