Dear friend,
2020 has been a year filled with unprecedented challenges and unimaginable obstacles. As we reflect back on it all—a global pandemic, a long-overdue reckoning over racism and inequality, the passing of Justice Ginsburg, the changed Supreme Court, and the U.S. election—we want to thank you. With your support, the Center for Reproductive Rights remains as strong as ever.
Our just-released 2020 Annual Report details some of the incredible cases and accomplishments we have achieved this year, all of which would not have been possible without your generosity. I hope you'll take a moment to look at it and join us in celebrating the bright spots that have come out of an otherwise difficult year.
Earlier this year, as our offices around the world transitioned to a remote work environment, anti-abortion politicians sought to use the COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity to block access. Our team sprung into action—remotely—and filed a flurry of lawsuits to protect access to safe, essential abortion care in eight states, including Louisiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.
We also celebrated several major victories this year. This first was at the U.S. Supreme Court this summer, when the Court struck down Louisiana's clinic shutdown law in our case, June Medical Services vs. Russo.
Then, just a few weeks later, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruled to protect schoolgirls from sexual violence in Latin America in our long-held case, Paola Guzmán Albarracín v. Ecuador.
In Africa, years of advocacy with local partners has led to the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights agreeing to hear our case against Nigeria for its failure to reduce maternal deaths—the first time the Commission is hearing a case on maternal or reproductive rights.
Each success, large and small, brought us closer to the world we envision, where reproductive rights are guaranteed and every person is free to make personal decisions without government interference. As we look to the future, we stand ready to advance reproductive rights as fundamental human rights around the world.
We are deeply grateful to every member of our community whose support has made this year’s progress possible. Thank you for standing with us.
Onward!
