Legislative Priorities Report for December 18, 2020
This week, Joe Biden gave a statement in which he stated that “gun violence”
is a “national health crisis.” He made this comment in the context of the
anniversary of the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary mass shooting on December 14,
2012. The left is skilled at redefining issues and coining new phrases to drive
their narrative. Republicans must stop parroting their words and trying to
debate them on their terms because it is a losing battle. Instead, we must
confidently and loudly tell the truth.
So, what is the truth about guns?
Guns are not violent; they are merely objects. But they are so important our
Founding Fathers saw fit to write a Second Amendment to the Constitution which
protects our right to keep and bear arms.
Why would these men think this was necessary? Was it because at that
particular time in history there was a need for guns more so than we have
today? No, of course not. It was because, in their wisdom, the Founders
recognized a fundamental truth about mankind, that we can be evil, and capable
of oppressing and killing each other. Therefore, they recognized the God-given
right of individuals to carry guns for self-defense and to protect themselves
from a government that becomes tyrannical.
The British were marching towards Concord Mass on April 19, 1775, to destroy a
weapons and armaments factory that was supplying the Sons of Liberty. That was
why patriots met the British on the field of Lexington Green. On October 2,
1835, the Mexican cavalry showed up at Gonzales, Texas, and demanded that the
Texians surrender their cannon. The reply was "Come and Take It."
The history of America, and the fight for independence for this Republic, and
Texas, is rooted in the assertion, as our chairman consistently reminds us,
“that an armed individual is a citizen, an unarmed one is a subject.” Tyranny
must always remove the ability of individuals to protect themselves, as we have
seen recently in Venezuela. The progressive socialists of the American Democrat
Party are exhibiting the same desires. Let's not forget that Joe Biden has said
he will place Robert Francis O'Rourke in a position to take care of his "gun
problem."
In countries where guns are taken away from the citizens, the government
steadily removes liberties.
This is the real agenda of the Democrats, to create a compliant, dependent
populace that is easily controlled. This is best achieved when gun rights are
removed, and most easily when under the guise of the public good, like attempts
to solve a “national health crisis.” We must dispel that myth. We cannot allow
the Democrats to incrementally remove our gun rights; no governing body gets to
view firearm ownership as a “privilege.”
One of our eight legislative priorities <[link removed]>
this session is Constitutional Carry. Perhaps, in some ways, it is the most
important priority, because without our firearm freedoms, government
regulations begin to creep in and we become powerless in the face of evil and
oppression. The priority reads:
“Restore legal Texas firearms owners ‘rights to carry them openly or
concealed without a permit, while maintaining the option of a permit for
reciprocity purposes.”
Texas, the state known for our rugged individualism and conservatism, is
actually behind in firearm freedoms. There are over 30 states that don’t
require a permit to carry a handgun, but Texas isn't one of them. That must
change.
Had there been armed staff at Sandy Hook Elementary, the horrific outcome may
have been avoided. In our current environment where Antifa, BLM, and other
agitators are daring to come into our residential neighborhoods and threaten
our properties and our lives, we must pass this priority.
Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the Governorship of the great
state of Texas, so it is past time to get this done. We have courageous men and
women in our Legislature. We must let them know Republican voters want our
rights restored so we can keep our communities safe and our government in its
rightful place.
For God and Texas,
