Dear Friend,

In a democracy, after the votes have been counted, all of us – Republicans, Democrats, and Independents – put our differences behind us, accept the results, and move on. If you didn’t like the results this time around, you wait until the next campaign to persuade more people to join your side. That’s how the democratic process works.

Yet weeks after voters decided the results of the election, President Trump and many of his allies still refuse to acknowledge President-elect Joe Biden’s victory — or take the necessary steps to ensure a smooth transition of power. Will you add your name to our statement calling on the Trump administration to cooperate with the transition immediately? ([link removed])

Let’s be clear: interfering with a peaceful presidential transition will threaten our national security, cause delays in COVID-19 vaccine distribution, and could lead to needless suffering for millions of Americans.

At Protect Democracy, we’re not motivated by party or ideology, but we will do whatever it takes to protect the will of the voters. That’s why we’re joining with a broad coalition calling on everyone in the Trump administration to stop their antics and fully cooperate with the transition immediately.

The good news is that we know public pressure is working. When enough of us called on General Services Administration (GSA) Administrator Emily Murphy to allow the Biden team to start the transition, she caved under pressure.

Murphy is not the only government official that interfered with our democratic process. A recent Washington Post survey found that only 27 congressional Republicans – of over 200 – were willing to acknowledge Biden’s victory. Not only are these individuals undermining our democratic institutions, but they could also cause serious problems for the next administration — which will take office during a nationwide pandemic and economic crisis.

We cannot let our guard down; regardless of who is in the White House, we must stand up to protect our democracy and demand a smooth transition of power. Add your name now if you agree – and believe that the presidential transition must be seamless from here on out ([link removed]) .

The election is over, it was free and fair, and Joe Biden will be the next President of the United States. It’s well past time for this country to move forward.

For democracy,
Sam Wohns
