Concerns rise over forced abortions Uyghur women in China ()
In recent weeks, the plight of Uyghur Muslims in forced Chinese labour camps has been a subject of intense scrutiny.
An in depth BBC's
investigation ([link removed]) revealed that "China is forcing hundreds of thousands of Uighurs and other minorities into hard, manual labour in the vast cotton fields." This report should have significant ramifications for Western nations, given that this particular crop of cotton "accounts for a fifth of the world’s cotton supply and is used widely throughout the global fashion industry."
Following these reports, MPs in the House of Commons raised concerns about the potential genocide of the Uighur people on account of the fact that the their population fell by over 80% in some regions between 2015 and 2018.
Leading pro-life MP Fiona Bruce asked the UK Government to take action, because the Uighur people suffer "forced birth control, pregnancy checks, the mandatory insertion of painful intrauterine devices, forced sterilisation and abortions."
Here in Ireland, some Oireachtas members have been putting a spotlight on these horrific human rights abuses. Senator Rónán Mullen has consistently raised this issue in the public square. His Seanad
motion ([link removed]) acknowledging these abuses was passed, and he hosted a webinar ([link removed]) with international experts this month drawing attention to the plight of the Uighur people. Leader of Aontú, Peadar Tóibín TD, has also taken part in protests ([link removed]) against this potential genocide outside the Chinese embassy in Dublin.
Foetal Pain Virtual Postcard. Take a moment to send a message to your TDs and Senators today ()
It has been a really encouraging couple of weeks on the pro-life front with the launch of the Oireachtas Life and Dignity Group’s report on abortion and foetal pain, followed by several outstanding contributions in the Dáil on the issue.
It was very noticeable that the Government were not prepared for the force and compelling nature of what the pro-life TDs had to say regarding the horrifying reality (confirmed in the recent UCC report) that babies are being born alive after failed abortions and left to die in Irish hospitals, and the fact that babies undergoing late term abortions are given no pain relief before the procedure takes place.
Minister of State for Public Health, Frank Feighan, was criticised in the Dáil chamber by several TDs for not answering their questions on the matter and for giving a scripted reply on behalf of the Government. At times he seemed lost for words but in the end undertook to consult with the Minister for Health and report back with a more detailed response.
The real significance though of the past few days is that finally after two years the truth and horror of the new abortion law is being brought out into the open. Politicians who were banging the drum and screaming for abortion in 2018 are suddenly nowhere to be seen.
But the politicians that defended life during the referendum are the ones standing strong and demanding answers.
To give momentum to what they are doing, pro-life supporters need to get behind their efforts. Please take 1 minute to send an e-card to your local Oireachtas members on the issues raised this week by pro-life TDs and Senators.
You can send the message here. ([link removed])
When you’ve done that, please share the link with friends and family!
Let’s build on the great work done this week by our wonderful pro-life Oireachtas representatives who are working tirelessly on our behalf and on behalf of unborn babies and their mothers.
