Dear John,
Every election year brings unexpected challenges, but 2020 has truly been a year like no other. While state lawmakers hit the ground running in January, pursuing dozens of life-affirming bills, efforts stalled in March when the COVID-19 global pandemic prematurely ended the legislative sessions in most states.
Americans United for Life responded to the pandemic by putting the spotlight on the growing threat of healthcare rationing and denials of medical care, publishing Ethical First Principles in a National Crisis, while mourning the loss of so many of our fellow Americans.
As lawmakers settled into virtual meetings, many state legislatures reopened, resulting in 13 states passing life-affirming laws in 2020. Lawmakers across the country continued to press forward to ensure that mothers are well-informed about the risks of abortion, that the public has critical statistics on the realities of abortion and its complications, and that public resources are no longer flowing to the abortion industry.
Each year, AUL releases our "Life List"—our annual state ranking based on our comprehensive analysis of each state's law and policy protections for human life, from conception to natural death. And I am privileged to announce that the #1 pro-life state in 2021 is Arkansas!
Arkansas passed a whopping 10 pro-life laws last year, and this year these laws went fully into effect.
Catherine Glenn Foster, President & CEO of Americans United for Life, was on the ground in Little Rock this week with Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge, Arkansas Lt. Governor Tim Griffin, lawmakers, and Family Council of Arkansas President Jerry Cox, bringing the people of Arkansas the great news! You can watch the live stream of our press conference here.
