A brighter transport future is possible

Season's Greetings,

We wrote to you a couple of weeks ago about our Christmas appeal - we're so grateful for all of the donations that are coming in! They will help us to call for a brighter transport future for people like Richard and Catherine.

"I do not drive and I need the bus to get to work, carry out my responsibilities as a carer, do my shopping and see my friends. For longer journeys I use the rail network. I rely totally on public transport."
- Richard, Brighton
"I live in a rural area and, whilst at the moment I drive, I am disabled and have the beginnings of macular degeneration, so at some time I will have to give up driving. I don't want to have to give up living as well because the lack of regular and affordable public transport prevents me from going out."
- Catherine, Cornwall

If you have not yet donated to our Christmas appeal and you'd like to, it's not too late. This is a difficult time for transport, but it's also a time of rethinking and reimagining. We'll use your donation to campaign for transport to be rebuilt in a way that works for everyone – and for the planet.

Thank you very much!

Will rail tickets be fit for the future?

Rail ticketing is one example of how transport is at a crossroads. Many more people are expected to return to workplaces part-time as a result of the pandemic. If they can't get affordable rail tickets, they may have little choice but to drive.

At the moment, part-time commuters who travel by rail must generally either buy full-time season tickets (wasting money on the days they don't travel), or expensive one-off tickets.

If this doesn't change - and with a fare increase coming in March - many people may stay away from the railway in the long term, with disastrous effects. So we're calling for flexible season tickets that can be used two or three days a week, for the growing number of part-time commuters.

If you commute part-time - or you're likely to start doing so - we'd love to know what you think about rail ticketing. Please tell us using this form. Thank you.

With warmest wishes for Christmas and a happy New Year
