John, I want to share with you a powerful example of what can happen when we elect District Attorneys that are committed to real justice and reform.
In the past year, more wrongfully incarcerated people were exonerated of murder in Philadelphia County than anywhere else in America. Why?1
Since taking office in 2018, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry has exonerated 15 people including 40-year-old Terrance Lewis who was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 1999. There are so many more innocent lives in prison right now who are in need of the transformational and life changing reform that Larry is bringing to the table – and he’s just getting started.
Larry has had to make tough choices in order to abolish the pillars of discrimination and racism and create a new culture of legal justice for our communities. From firing employers who were complicit in the convictions of people who are now being exonerated to providing education to prosecutors on how to represent defendants for the better – his radical efforts have landed Philadelphia on the national stage for being a beacon of hope for the potential our mission holds.
Larry’s exoneration of 15 people is just one way Larry has been working to transform the justice system in Philadelphia. Through the creation of Conviction Integrity Units and a partnership with the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission, Larry is actively working with other Real Justice reform prosecutors across the country.
Making this kind of change isn’t easy, John.
Everyone, from Trump and his GOP henchmen, to police unions and anti-reform elected officials have been attacking Larry since he took office because they’re scared of the bold change Larry is leading. It’s going to be a hard fight to reelect him – but Real Justice plans on having his back and we’re preparing right now to help make his reelection campaign a success.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, our current legal system is not broken, it's working exactly how it's supposed to. As local prosecutors and police enforcement slip below the radar to continue abusing these systems, it’s up to us to support and elect leaders, like Larry, to break down these barriers from the ground up.
Your friend and brother,
Shaun King
