Project Highlights

Featuring opening remarks by Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Chris Coons (D-DE), task force members discuss how campuses simultaneously uphold the values of inclusion and open inquiry. Heard on the panel:

“In higher education we have seen a change over time where discussion and debate has become a different kind of rhetoric: it’s not about listening, it’s about talking at or defending a position. And we’re really interested in making sure that people have an opportunity to engage and to learn from each other, because that’s what the college experience should be about.”

-- Dr. Carol Sumner, Vice President of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Texas Tech University.

Project Intern Cecelia Vieira writes how university classes on banned books teach students to analyze controversial and taboo topics. By learning to engage ideas within a controlled environment, students gain confidence in their thinking and learn to overcome the allure of cancel culture.
