Friend —
Thank you
for the overwhelming support from the chapter in voting to endorse
Detroit DSA member, Landis Spencer, for the Detroit Board of Police
Commissioners. Landis is running because the current board is not
fulfilling its responsibilities as a civilian oversight body. Over the
course of this summer, we have seen DPD brutalize peaceful protestors
and legal observers with tear gas and rubber bullets; we have seen the
expansion of surveillance technology, such as facial recognition,
which misidentifies Black faces 95% of the time; and we have witnessed
a police chief who would rather align with Trump and his fascistic
policies than those fearlessly standing up for Black
lives.
Despite this,
the board has done nothing to address these
issues. The board
has not brought up
a vote to ban facial recognition or investigated the brutalization of
protestors, nor have they questioned DPDs excessive police
budget—which hasn't been touched during the pandemic while other
departments have laid off staff and cut budgets. The board is acting
as an extension of DPD and is not fulfilling its original purpose.
It's time to return the board to its original goal, which is to be a
body of civilian oversight. We are honored to have a Detroit DSA
member in this fight, and we're excited to let you know that the
campaign has launched his campaign website. Take a look at
Landis' vision for the Detroit BOPC here:
