One person was arrested nearly every minute last year for simply possessing marijuana.

That’s why it was such a monumental achievement when the U.S. House passed the MORE Act earlier this month! It’s the first time a chamber of Congress has ever voted on and approved legislation that deschedules marijuana and begins to repair the harms of prohibition by expunging marijuana convictions and reinvesting in communities disproportionately impacted by marijuana prohibition, including Black, Latinx, and low-income communities.

A new Congressional Budget Office report estimates the MORE Act will generate nearly $14 billion in federal revenue over the next decade with a proportion going towards job training, legal aid, small business grants, and services to aid communities adversely impacted by marijuana prohibition. It is also estimated to save 73,000 years of time served and more than $1 billion in federal prison spending.

But the MORE Act also highlights why we can’t let our guard down and why we need you to fight even harder for federal marijuana reform.

At the last minute, legislators made problematic changes to the bill. They added language making it more difficult for people with marijuana convictions to fully participate in the industry at the federal level. They also snuck in provisions to limit resentencing and expungement relief for certain people with criminal legal records – in addition to broad, suspicion-less drug testing for federal workers

This historic vote in the House gives us hope, but our fight is far from over. We are committed to removing these unfair provisions and improving the bill to be more inclusive in the next Congress.
