Ten years ago, you would be hard-pressed to find states offering gender-neutral options on licenses or banning transgender youth from playing sports.

In a decade, so much has changed in the fight to protect transgender people. At Equality Federation, we’ve been working in collaboration with state-based equality organizations as they fight for increased protections for the transgender community. Sadly, along with progress, there has been an increased backlash.

We were in Massachusetts when voters overwhelmingly secured the first statewide victory for transgender protections at the ballot box. We track every anti-trans bill, from bathrooms to athletes to youth medical care bans, and in 2020, we saw these bills introduced at double the rate of previous years. We provide organizers on the ground with tools and messaging to build public opposition to these harmful bills so that, out of over 100 bills introduced, only two anti-trans bills became law this year.

Equality Federation has prioritized the rights of transgender people throughout the past 10 years and we will continue to do so until everyone is free to live their lives as their true, authentic selves without fear.
