John,
When I launched my campaign to be the first Somali American to serve in Congress in 2018, I saw firsthand the enormous barriers that keep working people from running for office.
Thanks to organizations like Justice Democrats, our progressive movement is getting bigger and stronger each day. Justice Democrats give people like me and AOC a fighting chance to run bold, progressive campaigns that take on the status quo and the resources to power us to victory.
Here’s the truth: We need to elect more progressive fighters in order to build on our movement and deliver meaningful change such as Medicare for All, canceling student loan debt, and passing a Green New Deal.
Justice Democrats needs our help to recruit, train, and organize our communities so that we can elect the next generation of diverse working-class leaders who are committed to racial, social, and economic justice. But they cannot do it alone.
We’re already planning ahead for the next election cycle, and Justice Democrats will need the resources to run a slate of progressive candidates and add to our growing Squad — like Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman.
As my sister Ayanna always says, the people closest to the pain should be closest to the power. And we are on our way to building a more just, equitable future that represents the voices of those left behind.
In solidarity,
Ilhan Omar
