Meet the Al Zubaidi family. After the devastating violence of war forced them to flee their home in Iraq in 2006, they spent eight years in three different countries, looking for a place to raise their children in safety and peace.
Finally in 2014, the family arrived as refugees in Detroit, where USCRI placed them in safe and affordable housing, helped the children enroll in school and their parents in English classes, assisted with health screening, provided cultural orientation, and helped the adults secure gainful employment.
Today, just six years after their arrival, Mr. Al Zubaidi is a maintenance manager at a local hotel, Mrs. Al Zubaidi is a teaching assistant, and they have purchased a home of their own! Their two sons, aged 13 and 10, are in school and live in a safe and stable home. Because the family received the support they needed to get back on their feet, their children have a bright and promising future ahead of them.
