Hi John,

We’re getting in touch with some good news.

Oldham’s Coronavirus vaccination programme has started and residents aged over 80 are now receiving the vaccine.

Over the coming weeks and months residents of all ages will be offered the vaccine – so please take it up.

The vaccine is safe and has gone through many months of testing to get to this point.

To ease pressure on the NHS at this busy time, and to ensure the process runs as smoothly as possible, please don’t contact your GP practice. Don’t worry, you’ll be called by one of our representatives when it’s your turn.

This is how the appointment and booking system will work:
* If you are registered with a GP in Oldham, you will be called by your GP practice or a member of NHS staff (this may also be from a mobile phone number as well, just so you are aware). If you live in Oldham but are registered with a surgery practice outside the borough you will be contacted by representatives from that local authority area.
* The caller will identify themselves and say they are calling on behalf of your GP and they are getting in touch about booking an appointment for a Coronavirus vaccine.
* The caller will then offer dates and times for you to attend clinic. They will also give the location of the site where you will receive it. This may not be your usual surgery.
* If you are receiving the Pfizer vaccination, you will also be given the time, date and location for the second dose of the vaccination. It is vital, you return and keep your second appointment 21 days later.
* The callers booking vaccinations will not ask for any other personal details other than asking you to confirm your name. They certainly will not ask for any money. Sadly, we have already been alerted to possible phone scams with callers asking for payment for access to vaccinations.
* Once you have received the vaccination you must not drive for 15 minutes afterwards. You will need to remain in clinic until that time has elapsed.

It’s important that you attend your vaccination appointment. But if for any reason you can’t, please let your practice know as soon as possible.

We want to remind people not to turn up before their appointment to reduce any time they may be waiting and dress appropriately for the weather as you may have to wait outside.

As mentioned above, you will need to stay on site for 15 minutes after your vaccination for observation. Every practice offering the vaccine has a designated area outside to allow social distancing.

Each site will provide a covered waiting area, gazebos are being installed at all sites offering the vaccination, but of course weather conditions predict when this work can be carried out.

The last year has been hard for everyone and the pandemic is far from over in our communities so it’s important you continue to follow Coronavirus restrictions, social distance and sanitise your hands regularly.

But, one thing that has stood out is Oldham’s community spirit. People across the borough are going above and beyond to help their communities every day.

Together we are stronger and everyone can help bring the infection rate down.

We are Oldham.
