Before our newsroom was scattered to living rooms and home offices, I’ve seen them spend hours on the phone, pacing back and forth, calling source after source. Our data reporters run complex mathematical models to reveal the truth behind a mass of numbers. Our reporters use every tool they’ve learned, and some they’ve invented along the way, to gather facts for their investigations.

One mission unites all of us here at ProPublica: using the moral force of journalism to spur real-world change. Sometimes we see that change quickly, and sometimes it takes longer — but we keep digging, for as long as it takes. This year, our stories have prompted investigations into government employees, halted and revised school seclusion policies, stopped unethical debt collections on the poor, and much more.
