Weeks after Election Day, it's clear that Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump. However, Donald Trump refuses to concede, and many Republican officials will NOT admit that Joe Biden won. In fact, as of this writing, dozens of Republican members of Congress refuse to say it publicly. Meanwhile, 126 Republican congresspeople backed a lawsuit to overturn Biden's victory (Fortunately, that lawsuit was thrown out by the Supreme Court). ([link removed])

This is dangerous for our democracy. Even if Trump fails in his attempt to steal the election - and it's virtually certain that he will - it sets a worrisome precedent. That's because functioning democracies depend on peaceful transfers of power. This is especially true during a pandemic, when we are depending on the next administration to be able to hit the ground running on day one.

In addition, Trump's false claims of a "rigged election" - and the Republicans' enabling of those claims - endanger people's lives. Republican lawmakers may think there's no harm in paying lip service to Trump's bogus theories, but there is: People believe those theories, and they're taking matters into their own hands. Across the country, election workers are receiving death threats just for doing their jobs. This has to stop.
