CCL talks about bipartisanship and carbon pricing on CBS

What can President-elect Joe Biden do about climate change with a
divided Congress? CCL Senior Director of Government Affairs Ben
Pendergrass talked to CBS about carbon pricing and a bipartisan approach
to climate action.

"There's not an economist you will meet that doesn't prefer a carbon
price over any other approach," Ben told CBS' Jeff Berardelli. "It's
efficient. It gets the job done." He also said there may be some
agreement on infrastructure spending to support a new low-carbon
economy.

We have a short video of Ben's appearance on CBS that you can share on

In addition to talking about carbon pricing on national television, CCL
last week built more support for legislation to make it happen.
Volunteers meeting with members of Congress generated three more
co-sponsors for the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act — Rep.
Mike Quigley (D-IL), Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN) and Rep. John Garamendi
(D-CA) — bringing the number of cosponsors up to 85. You can tweet your
appreciation to the new cosponsors using our online action tool

Once sworn in, President Biden is going to move fast on climate. And no
matter the results of the Georgia runoff elections, Congress will be
closely split between Democrats and Republicans. Broad, bipartisan
support is our only way forward. Luckily, this is what we've been doing
all along!

With more than 182,500 supporters across the U.S. and inroads to nearly
every Congressional office, Citizens' Climate is the organization best
positioned to secure the bipartisan support we'll need. But to be most
effective, we need your help

Right now, we're halfway through our fundraiser and more than halfway to
our $1 million goal. But with only two weeks left to give, we still need
to raise $298,737. Reaching this goal will give us the resources we need
to organize more people, faster, and hit the ground running in 2021.
Will you help us cross the finish line?

Take action this week

If you have a little time: Invite someone who might be interested to
watch the recording

of our December national call with guest speaker Christiana Figueres.
Christiana was the architect of the 2015 Paris Accord and the founder of
Global Optimism, which "exists to catalyse transformative actions in our
world" to tackle climate change. Consider watching the recording
together with a group on Zoom so you can discuss radical optimism
afterwards.

If you have more time : Early voting has started in Georgia's Senate
runoff election, and Environmental Voter Project is seeking volunteers
to phone and text 382,844 unlikely-to-vote environmentalists in Georgia.
The runoff there will decide which party controls the U.S. Senate. To
claim a shift, sign up at environmentalvoter.org/events

Media: Op-ed lands in 2 Texas papers

Op-eds, particularly those that mention members of Congress, are a great
way to get the attention of congressional offices. And when the op-ed
comes from a former employee of Chevron who lives in Houston, it lends
another level of credibility to the message. That's what CCL Houston
volunteer Waqar Qureshi did when he co-authored our recent op-ed with
CCL Executive Director Mark Reyolds, which was published in the Houston
Chronicle

and the Laredo Morning Times

[link removed]

. In his piece, Waqar acknowledged the climate actions taken by area
members of Congress, including Republican Dan Crenshaw (above), and
urged all of them to support the Energy Innovation Act.

CCL volunteers are regularly activating the " five levers

" of political will in their communities. If you'd like to learn more
about how to pull the media lever like these volunteers did, watch or

Biden's picks bode well for climate: Though carbon pricing is not front
and center in the new administration's prescription for climate change,
President-elect Joe Biden's selection of John Kerry, Janet Yellen and
Gina McCarthy for leading positions bodes well for the policy, as all
have expressed support for putting a price on carbon. Read more
