Dear Friend,
Every member has the right to choose what they place their left hand on when swearing in; most choose either the Bible, or a similar religious text, depending on how they identify. However, some choose to place their left hand on the United States Constitution.Â
The Secular Coalition for America (SCA) applauds those members who choose to use the Constitution for their oath taking, and encourages all Members of Congress to do the same. After all, it is the United States Constitution that they are swearing allegiance to, and not their religions. Also, it would acknowledge and include those constituents who may practice a different faith or none at all.
