Yesterday, Google reported that Gmail.com had been returning hard bounce messages for a significant percentage of their total email universe. As a result, you may have seen low open rates and high bounce rates.
We are suppressing bounce processing for all gmail.com addresses. We are also resubscribing anyone who bounced at gmail.com after 1:00 pm Eastern yesterday, which is when bounces for gmail.com began to spike. That process is running now and will be complete later today.
While Gmail has said the issue has cleared, we and others in the email space are seeing ongoing issues including further bounces and delays. We will continue to monitor the situation and will inform you if we need to take any additional measures in response to this matter.
For now, we recommend that you proceed with caution with the understanding that issues may crop up which will require further remediation. If you see higher bounce rates than usual after sending an email, Gmail’s issues are likely the source of the problem.
We will continue to provide updates in the Resource Center, alongside new feature and site maintenance announcements.
As always, please do not hesitate to reach us with any questions or concerns.
