Canadian workers who lost their jobs are getting $2,000 a month. Germany is paying its companies to keep employees on payroll. France is giving struggling businesses 10,000 euro (just over $12,000) a month. And even Boris Johnson, the conservative British prime minister, is giving an 80% wage subsidy to victims of the economic fallout of the virus.

But not us. We're seeing what meager benefits we were given expire -- and Trump and the GOP just don't care. They're giving insultingly lower relief offers just to make Democrats seem difficult, then making the most of their own taxpayer-funded health care while the rest of us are pushed to the brink of exhaustion just thinking about how we're going to get by.

We like to think the American people showed their dissatisfaction with Trump's failure to provide relief by sending him packing. Good -- he deserved it.

But the GOP actually gained seats in the House, and could soon keep their control of the Senate. The same Republican leaders who have done nothing as their international peers were working hard to help their citizens through the pandemic may wield more power than ever before in 2021, even with Biden in the White House.

Americans need a relief deal just like our allies in Europe are getting, and we need it now.
