City reaffirms global agreement to underline its green agenda

**A message from City Council Deputy Leader, Cllr Sally Longford:**

sally longford

In the recovery period from this pandemic there is an opportunity to do things differently and its vital that we put sustainable carbon neutrality at the core of the city and its renewal. Having set an ambitious target to become the first carbon neutral UK city by 2028, backed up with an action plan of our own, we see opportunities not only to improve the local environment and contribute towards saving the planet, but also to create new jobs in green industries which will help with our recovery from the pandemic. This week two important milestones have been achieved for the citys sustainable recovery.

I was pleased to reaffirm our carbon-neutral commitment by signing once again the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCM) which we first signed up to in 2008. This is a worldwide alliance for climate change, representing more than 10,000 cities and local governments across six continents. By signing up to the GCM, a city is vowing to accelerate a reduction of carbon emissions in their area in line with the Paris Agreement. This complements our bold plan to go further and be the UKs first carbon-neutral city by 2028. Find out more and some of the action weve taken so far [ [link removed] ]

Also this week the Nottingham Growth Board launched the Nottingham Economic Recovery and Renewal Plan, with our carbon neutral ambitions forming one of six key ambitions for how we move beyond Covid. You can have your say on this future vision for the city as part of the consultation with local people and businesses [ [link removed] ] which is currently underway.

**Covid-19 Tiers to be reviewed on Thursday**

Nottingham Skyline

Englands three-tier system of coronavirus restrictions is being reviewed for the first time since being brought back after lockdown. We are now expecting to hear if there is to be change of tier level for Nottingham tomorrow.

Whether the city remains in tier three or moves to tier two, its vital that everyone continues to stick to the rules which have seen the number of Covid cases fall dramatically in recent weeks.

*Christmas Recycling*

Most of us recycle lots during and after Christmas but are we getting it right? Many people try to do the right thing and more of us are recycling than ever before which is brilliant. However not all materials are as recyclable as they might at first seem.

For instance did you know, not all wrapping paper can be recycled? Do the scrunch test to find out if your paper can go in your recycling brown bin grey lid. If it scrunches it CAN be recycled. Foil / glitter wrapping paper & Christmas cards CAN'T be recycled.

The graphic below shows some more top tips as to what can and cant be recycled this Christmas. Remember if in doubt, leave it out as contaminated recycling costs the council money.
