Retrial of Mynor Padilla to begin December 17, 2020 in Guatemala

Mynor Padilla – former head of security for Hudbay Minerals and Skye Resources, and former Lieutenant Colonel in the Guatemalan Army – is on trial for the mining related murder of Mayan Q’eqchi’ land and human rights defender Adolfo Ich, and the shooting and paralyzing of German Chub that same day, September 27, 2009.
July 2018: German Chub and Angelica Choc (widow of Adolfo Ich) in Toronto, Canada,
after 4 days of depositions (examinations for discovery) by Hudbay Minerals’ team of lawyers,
as part of the landmark civil lawsuits in Canada.

The initial criminal trial in Guatemala, that lasted from 2014-2017, was characterized by procedural and substantive irregularities, by racism, threats and violence against the victims, their families and witnesses, and by the alleged corruption of the trial court judge herself.

Now, after three years of legal wrangling and delays – plus more Covid-19 delays – the re-trial of Myror Padilla is set to begin in Puerto Barrios, Izabal, Guatemala.

Will justice be possible in Canada or Guatemala for Hudbay Minerals mining repression?

All respect to Angelica Choc, German Chub, their lawyer and supporters, for their dignity, courage and tenacity.
