Dear friend,

Hot off the presses, it's NIRH's 2020 Year in Review, Gaining Ground: Proactive Reproductive Health and Rights Legislation in the States! Our year-end report is an in-depth review of the ways in which states pushed forward a proactive agenda for reproductive freedom over the past year: [link removed]

2020 has been a year like no other, with the COVID-19 pandemic upending daily life and legislative sessions across the country. Amid the pandemic -- and in some cases, because of the disparities it revealed in health care -- a number of states found ways to prioritize reproductive health, rights, and justice.

By repealing restrictions on abortion, working to ease access to contraception, passing paid leave laws, and moving other key pieces of legislation, states worked against great odds to continue expanding reproductive health and rights in 2020. This year, 44 states and Washington, D.C., proposed a total of 608 proactive bills, and enacted 74.

As we look to 2021, we anticipate dire threats to reproductive freedom from some states and hostility to abortion access from the Supreme Court. Gaining Ground outlines policy recommendations that highlight the ways states can push forward an even bolder agenda and play a leading role in protecting and advancing reproductive health, rights, and justice in 2021 and beyond.
