Dear John,
|
Whiplash. That's the feeling I have now that so-called "fiscal hawks" in Washington are suddenly feigning concern over soaring budget deficits. Of course, they've been awfully quiet over the past four years as President Trump exploded budget deficits with his $1.9 trillion unpaid-for tax cut boondoggle that mainly benefited the wealthiest Americans.
Instead of supporting critical proposals that will strengthen earned benefits, help older Americans and our nation's most vulnerable citizens get through this pandemic, and help offset another tiny Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment, these same politicians are now promising to "address," "fix" and "adjust" so-called "entitlements" — the benefits you've paid for and earned:
- "I think spending, entitlement reform, growth and the economy are all things that we're going to have to be focused on next year, and, yeah, I would expect you'll hear a lot more about that." – Senator John Thune (SD)
- Senator Mitch McConnell (KY) has claimed that so-called "entitlements" — the Social Security and Medicare benefits you've paid for and earned — were "the real drivers of the debt" and had to be adjusted "to the demographics of the future."
- "We've got to understand that we're going to be raising the debt ceiling in perpetuity if we don't find a way to bend the curve." – Senator Lindsey Graham (SC). And by "bend the curve" he means cutting earned benefits.
That's why your backing is urgently needed right now! Please make a donation of $10 or $5 to help us remind all members of Congress that Social Security and Medicare are benefits you've paid for and earned. They are not to be used to pay down deficits, fund tax cuts for the wealthy or pay for completely unrelated programs!
The National Committee is fighting to keep Social Security and Medicare off the chopping block in the critical weeks ahead as spending proposals and priorities emerge in Congress. Please give what you can today to help us protect the health and financial security of workers and retirees during this uncertain time!
