Friend,
The latest polling shows that 57% of retirees rely on Social Security as their largest source of retirement income -- not IRAs, 401(k)s, or any other work-sponsored pension plans.
And now, 71% of Americans over the age of 70 are concerned about this critical lifeline drying up. It’s no surprise why: Since 2010, the Social Security payroll tax has not been enough to cover the massive -- and aging -- baby-boomer generation. Now that Donald Trump has suspended the payroll tax under the guise of pandemic relief, we’re on the brink of catastrophe.
This fear partly drove turnout for the Biden-Harris ticket, and now, it’s up to this incoming administration to bolster the program. President-elect Joe Biden made boosting Social Security benefits, particularly for low-income households, a major part of his policy platform on the campaign trail -- but the chances of that happening are now dwindling.
Joe Biden’s plan, which would involve raising taxes on corporations and individuals earning $400,000+ a year, was largely contingent on a Democratic majority in both the House and the Senate.
This will be incredibly difficult if Mitch McConnell remains Senate Majority Leader come January.
With all the excitement and relief surrounding Biden’s win, our attention has strayed from the real and pressing threat Mitch McConnell and an unfriendly Senate pose to the future of Social Security. We need to speak up and speak out NOW -- and we can’t do it without you. If you agree that we MUST keep Social Security strong, please, lend your voice to ours now before it’s too late. Tell us now:
