We're 21 days from Georgia's Senate run-off election. Here's the news that you'll want to know:
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell: "The Electoral College has spoken, so today I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden." "'As of this morning, our country officially has a president-elect and a vice president-elect,' McConnell said. 'The Electoral College has spoken, so today I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden. The president-elect is no stranger to the Senate; he’s devoted himself to public service for many years.'" (National Review) • Sen. McConnell congratulated Joe Biden as president-elect this morning from the Senate floor.
• In a 10-minute speech, Sen. McConnell acknowledged President Trump's accomplishments: "As you can see, it would take far more than one speech to catalog all the major wins the Trump Administration has helped deliver for the American people. The outsider who swore he would shake up Washington and lead our country to new accomplishments both at home and abroad proceeded to do exactly that. President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence deserve our thanks and our gratitude for their tireless work — and their essential roles in all these victories and many more."
• Sen. McConnell also explained: "Many millions of us had hoped the presidential election would yield a different result but our system of government has processes to determine who will be sworn in on January the 20th," and noting that "the Electoral College has spoken," he congratulated Biden and Kamala Harris.
• Joe Biden reported that he had a "good conversation" with Sen. McConnell today.
• Electors to the Electoral College met across America yesterday, as this part of the election process was in the spotlight as never before. Biden received 306 Electoral College votes; President Trump, 232.
• Congress will meet on January 6, 2021 "to count and certify the electoral votes" ahead of the inauguration on January 20, 2021. Rep. Mo Brooks (AL) previously said he would challenge the Electoral College results, though a Senator must also join him (or any other House member) in a challenge.
Hillary Clinton wants the Electoral College to be abolished -- after she serves as elector for Joe Biden in New York yesterday. "Former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and her husband, former president Bill Clinton, cast two of New York’s Electoral College votes Monday, but Clinton made certain to reassure her remaining supporters that she still supports abolishing the Electoral College despite her participation." (Daily Wire) • Yesterday Hillary Clinton -- along with Bill Clinton -- served as electors for Joe Biden in New York.
• But Hillary Clinton reaffirmed her desire to abolish the Electoral College. As the Daily Wire reported: "'I believe we should abolish the Electoral College and select our president by the winner of the popular vote, same as every other office,' Clinton said on social media above a photo of herself giving the 'thumbs up.'"
• The left has opposed the Electoral College in recent years and wants it to be ended. After President Trump was elected in 2016, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) even introduced a bill to abolish the Electoral College.
Joe Biden campaigning in Georgia today for Senate run-off election. "Biden’s pick for chief of staff – longtime aide Ron Klain – said last month that Biden would head to Georgia to campaign on behalf of Ossoff and Warnock. Since then, Trump traveled to Georgia to hold a large rally for Perdue and Loeffler. And Vice President Mike Pence this week will make his fourth swing on the Georgia runoffs campaign trail." (Fox News) • Joe Biden is campaigning in Georgia today for the two Democratic Senate candidates, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, ahead of the January 5th run-off elections. Both parties see the January 5th election as a must-win since it will determine which party controls the Senate next year.
• President Trump and Vice President Pence have already campaigned in Georgia for the Republican candidates, Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue, who are the current senators for the state.
