Election 2020

GLAAD’s New Survey finds 81% of LGBTQ voters went for President-elect Joe Biden and Corrects the Record on LGBTQ Voter Turnout

In a survey conducted following the Presidential Election to correct the record on a previous poll that circulated to many media outlets, GLAAD found that 81 percent of LGBTQ voters turned out for President-elect Joe Biden. The poll also asked respondents what they’re top issues were going into the election, which are: COVID-19, healthcare and racial justice. In an article published by The Washington Post, studies show the LGBTQ vote helped decide the election. Now, GLAAD is working with advocates on the ground in Georgia to ensure people cast their votes. If the two pro-equality candidates win, it could pave the way for the Equality Act to pass.

Transgender Media and Representation

GLAAD works with Elliot Page to share his story

GLAAD’s Director of Transgender Representation Nick Adams, in collaboration with Elliot Page and their team, created a GLAAD style guide for journalists on how to respectfully cover their announcement that they are transgender, sharing their name, pronouns and gender identity with the world. The tip sheet for journalists was distributed with Elliot’s announcement and was almost universally adopted by the media in their reporting. Adams also spoke to multiple media outlets, including Associated Press, The New York Times, The Washington Post and more, both on the record and behind-the-scenes, to provide context for Elliot’s announcement and help journalists write respectful and accurate stories.

Getty Images with GLAAD release photographer guidelines to improve visual representation of the transgender community

GLAAD and Getty Images announced their formal partnership with the launch of The Transgender Guidelines, co-authored by Nick Adams and Alex Schmider, GLAAD’s Associate Director of Transgender Representation. The Transgender Guidelines is a comprehensive resource designed to support Getty Images and iStock contributors around the world to better represent the diversity of trans people through authentic, respectful and intersectional imagery. The guidelines include accurate terminology for use in tagging and captions, clichés to avoid, as well as ways to create a safe and welcoming set environment when shooting trans and non-binary models. World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day shines spotlight on those who have lost their lives and are living with HIV and AIDS

December 1 marked World AIDS Day, which serves to honor and remember the millions who have been lost to the HIV and AIDS epidemic and to bring attention to those currently living with HIV and AIDS. Throughout the day, GLAAD worked with and highlighted LGBTQ activists, celebrities, and community members who are living with HIV, including two panels hosted by Anheuser-Busch InBev and Georgia Power, and two GLAAD Hangouts with playwright Donja R. Love and Karl Schmid. Earlier this year, GLAAD and Gilead Sciences released its first State of HIV Stigma survey, which found that nearly 9 in 10 Americans believe “there is still stigma around HIV,” and 88% of Americans agree that “people are quick to judge those with HIV.”

I’m a lesbian,” she told Head of Talent Anthony Ramos. “And it has taken me 42 years to say that, but I’m so proud of where I am right now and I’m so happy where I am. Influx of LGBTQ holiday films moves the needle in Hollywood and beyond

TV channels and streaming platforms have made 2020 a record-breaking year for LGBTQ inclusion in holiday films. Following a 2019 campaign by GLAAD to reinstate an LGBTQ-focused ad that was wrongfully removed from the Hallmark Channel, the network has debuted a holiday film with an LGBTQ storyline starring friend of GLAAD Jonathan Bennett. Lifetime also premiered an LGBTQ holiday film. Hulu gained distributing rights to the hit Happiest Season, which quickly became the streamer’s most-watched premiere for an original film. GLAAD board member Justin Tranter served as an Executive Producer and co-writer of the soundtrack for the film. According to the LA Times, the entire soundtrack was written and performed by an LGBTQ cast.
