Advent Appeal: Expose the Deception. Stop the Killing.
Day 1: This was a DECEPTION on a gigantic scale
Dear Friend and Supporter,
For sure, the year of 2020 will be remembered for Covid-19. How can it not?
It’s hard to imagine a single person who has been left unaffected by the pandemic.
While many have contracted the virus, many others still are struggling with the difficult social consequences which continue to impact our lives nine months later.
But when the dust finally settles, will anyone care about, or even be aware that many unborn babies’ lives were discarded because DIY abortions were available—virtually on demand?
And will anyone care that thousands of women and girls were sold the false-promise of a convenient and ‘safe’ solution to a crisis pregnancy?
This was a deception of women on a gigantic scale because virtually all the usual safeguards which are there to protect women’s health had been removed.
Not only is the emergency DIY abortion scheme open to widescale fraud, but women are being led to believe DIY abortion is a ‘miracle’ solution which is simple and safe, when it’s neither.
Women are being led to believe DIY abortion is a miracle solution which is simple and safe, when it is neither.
Physical dangers outweighing the risks of Covid?
Since 2014, medical abortions (involving the taking of 2 pills) have overtaken surgical abortions in the UK.
Research commissioned by SPUC, in 2017, lists the most common adverse effects for medical abortions as:
1. Hospital admission
2. Blood transfusion
3. A & E treatment
4. IV antibiotics administration
5. Infection
6. Death (in the UK in 2020, medical abortions have claimed the lives of at least two women)
Another significant problem associated with medical abortions is ectopic pregnancy, a leading cause of maternal deaths. (Ectopic pregnancy is when a newly conceived baby develops outside of its mother’s womb - usually in the fallopian tube - leading to a rupture).
Yet abortion providers without exception describe medical abortions as safe and effective.
Let’s not forget either that women are being asked to make the biggest decision of their lives when they are least emotionally equipped to do so.
And to make that decision in a hurry.
As Dr Mary Kimmel, Director of Perinatal Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina Medical School points out, the hormones oestrogen and progesterone begin “ramping-up” when a woman becomes pregnant.
Dr Kimmel says that these changes in hormone levels can exacerbate feelings of a loss of control in newly pregnant women, often resulting in fears and anxieties about her future.
Typically, she will ask herself questions like:
“What will a baby mean for my life?”
“How will a child affect my relationships, will I have the support of my partner, my parents or my boss, once the baby arrives?”
“Will I be a good mother, and how will I handle my new responsibilities?"
In a crisis pregnancy situation fears and concerns are likely to heightened further still.
DIY abortion: A tool of control for abusers
In situations where a woman is experiencing Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), DIY abortion schemes are creating an environment for a perfect storm of domestic abuse.
Around 75% of the women who contact ARCH – the post-abortion counselling service run by SPUC’s charitable arm – have experienced some sort of coercion from partners or others.
The government’s DIY abortion scheme gives violent partners (even parents and friends) a powerful control tool with which to coerce women and girls into abortions that they don’t want and will almost certainly regret.
Screening protocols for domestic coercion at GPs’ surgeries can identify cases of abuse, thus enabling measures to be put in place which help victims keep their babies and look forward to the future with the knowledge their child can be brought up in a safe environment.
But such heavy reliance on ‘telemedicine’ during the pandemic is making it impossible for a patient’s GP to screen for signs of coercion.
We don’t have much time left to act.
The government is on the verge of betraying unborn babies and their mothers to the abortion lobby and it is going to use the national consultation process to rubber-stamp permanent DIY abortions unless we stop them.
Health Minister, Matt Hancock, must be held to his promise that sending abortion pills by post to women at home is only a temporary pandemic measure.
Mr Hancock needs to feel pressure NOW if the NHS is to revert to the pre-Covid arrangements in which abortion providers must see women in clinics.
It’s vital that the voice of unborn babies (and their mothers) isn’t drowned out during the consultation process by powerful interest groups like BPAS, Marie Stopes and the NHS.
That’s why SPUC is working hard behind the scenes in the lead up to Christmas to block our opponents’ efforts to make ‘temporary’ DIY abortions ‘permanent’.
We are pulling out all the stops.
* We are putting powerful lobbying ammunition in the hands of our supporters. SPUC briefings are evidence-based and offer robust lines of argument and they have the capacity to generate thousands of powerful personal submissions to the consultation.
* We are calling on SPUC’s national branch network (around 100 branches) and asking them to urge family, friends and church contacts to respond immediately.
* We are fortunate to have a veritable army of supporters who campaign for us in an independent capacity, adding another critical string to our campaigning bow.
* Advertising on social media platforms, like Facebook, ensures that not only can we reach more sympathetic supporters online, but we can reach many more people besides who may not yet be “pro-life” but are open to the truth.
But harnessing and then unleashing the potency of these different supporter segments on and offline requires hard cash to plan, organise and execute.

Normally at this time of year SPUC’s fundraising team are busily packing promotional materials for churches who’ve agreed to hold a collection for its work in January.
But this year is different.
Owing to Covid, the number of churches that cannot hold a collection for SPUC next month, is exceeding the number that say they will.
And the problem is further compounded by the fact that attendance numbers at churches in January will be well down on previous years, so the monies raised are going to drop substantially.
All this means that SPUC will see a drop in funding by around £150K at a time when the DIY consultation period is drawing to a close and when we need to be lobbying hardest to influence the Government’s decision.
And that’s why I must ask once again for your kind support.
Quite simply, without it, this battle could be lost.
Today is Day 1 of SPUC’s ten-day online Advent appeal called Expose the Deception/ Stop the Killing.
We are launching it because we believe that lives can be saved by exposing the deception which is propping up DIY abortions schemes across Britain today.
Will you help to get the appeal off to a flying start by donating to protect unborn babies + mothers TODAY?
You can get personally involved and give babies, and their mothers, the strong voice they so badly need over the coming weeks as Government consultations consider the future of DIY abortions in England, Wales and Scotland by:
1. Donating £10 or £15 or possibly £25 or £100 with your debit/credit card today
Donate NOW ([link removed])
2. New dangers will almost certainly emerge in the New Year and that's why I am always so grateful when kind offerings in the range of £250 or £500 or even £1000 or more come SPUC's way.
Larger gifts like these not only guarantee the vital work of SPUC goes on, but they ensure that more lives can be saved too.
Donate NOW ([link removed])
3. Pledging a monthly gift of £5, £10, or £15 a month - or if you are in a position to increase a monthly gift to SPUC by a similar amount - will certainly ensure babies do NOT get forgotten and overlooked by Covid-19.
Donate NOW ([link removed])
And I understand that you will do whatever you can today to rid this country of the terrible scourge of DIY abortions and keep the enemies of our babies firmly at bay.
Yours in defence of life
John Smeaton
Chief Executive
